These are the places in the UK with the most expensive – and cheapest – gardening prices


While the winter chill currently keeps us wrapped up indoors, many Britons are staying warm thinking about summer barbecues, parties in the sun and alfresco dining.

Yet, in the spring, we usually find that our gardens aren’t able to accommodate any kind of fun in the sun. In these cases, should we turn to a professional for help or roll up our sleeves and get stuck in ourselves?

Thinking about this question, Simply Paving analyzed the rates of hundreds of gardeners across the country to see where the most and least expensive professional gardening services are available.

Research found that Scarborough has the highest rate of gardeners in the UK.

Typically, those living in the Yorkshire seaside town spend an average of £400 on the daily rate of a professional gardener. This is more than double (104%) the national average gardener’s daily rate (£196).

Sourced from, the data analyzed daily rates for gardeners across the UK. An average price was then generated for each location, which was then used to calculate the cheapest and most expensive regions for gardeners.

Simply Paving also found that Redcar & Cleveland in the North East has the lowest prices in the country for professional gardeners, averaging £77 per day.

Gardening services across the UK have different average costs

Regional analysis, however, tells a different story. Greater London, not Scarborough Yorkshire, stands out as the most expensive region to hire a gardener, costing an average of £249 per day.

Opposite of the Spectrum, Residents of Northern Ireland enjoy the cheapest average rates for gardeners in the UK, paying just £152 per day, 22% less than the national average daily rate.

Simply Paving has also compared the average prices for individual gardening jobs across the UK, including general garden maintenance, high pressure jet washes and the installation of paving for a patio or garden path.

The research found gardening services based in the East Midlands charge the most for these popular jobs.

Notably, gardeners in this region charge 21% more than the national average for paving installation (£306). Even general garden maintenance (£62 on average) is relatively expensive in the East Midlands, priced at £11 more than the national average (£51).

The data also shows that Yorkshire & Humber is the cheapest region for garden maintenance, hose washing and paving installation, with average prices of £40, £87 and £238, respectively.

In fact, Yorkshire & Humber is the only area in the UK to offer jet washing services for less than £100 per session.
