Horticulture Week Podcast: Keeping the Horticulture Show on the Road with Andy Tudbury

0

Belvoir Castle Garden Exhibition organizer Andy Tudbury has a background in photography and garden design, having completed 28 exhibition gardens in his career.

He created the Garden Lounge four years ago and was advised by entertainment expert Stephen Bennett to keep the quality high, including, he jokes, hosting the “Garden Lounge with the toilets the cleanest in Britain”.

The 2022 show takes place on 16 and 17 July and is the longest running continuous garden show in the UK to survive the pandemic. Tudbury explains how the “puzzle” of booths, ticket sales and attractions all add up to make the event viable.

This year’s fair has moved to a larger venue at the castle, demonstrating Tudbury’s confidence in the market. He says there’s pent-up demand and their launches will be like “dropping a cork out of a bottle of Prosecco” this year.

The London College of Garden Design has a record number of entries (42) for garden design at the event, as a good number of nurseries are booked, despite some growers turning to online sales and stay away from living rooms during lockdown.

Speakers range from David Domoney, Jonathan Moseley, David Stevens, Annabelle Padwick, Gareth Wilson and John Stirland to young houseplant guru Joe Bagley. They constitute an important element of the composition of the event, alongside commercial stands, entertainment, gardens and crèches.

Downtown Garden Center sponsors wheelbarrow gardens, with Tudbury’s philosophy of giving everyone a stage, from TV celebrities to gardeners of the future.
