Performs intermediate landscape and turf management work in the design, layout, maintenance and upkeep of City properties and turf.

An employee in this class performs specialized work in land and turf management and assists the Landscaping Superintendent in designing landscaping, selecting and installing plants, and maintaining grounds, parks and facilities from the city. Work includes mowing, lawn aeration and planting. The work requires applied knowledge of the management of turf, flowering plants, shrubs and trees, as well as herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals. An employee is exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, occupational hazards associated with grounds maintenance work, as well as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases and oils. Work is subject to OSHA’s final bloodborne pathogen standards. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Landscape Superintendent and is evaluated through observation and lectures.

Essential job function
Responsible for horticultural maintenance activities.
Supervises personnel assigned to horticultural activities and projects.
Provides turf maintenance for parks and grounds, including aeration, seeding, fertilizing, planning and maintaining proper drainage, weed control, mulching, irrigation and mowing.
Plans, schedules and oversees the maintenance of beautification areas
Plant trees, shrubs and flowers
Maintains flowerbeds, trees and shrubs.
Maintains irrigation systems in flower beds and lawn areas.
Applies proper chemicals and fertilizers, keeps accurate records, and follows all federal, state, and local regulations.
Make purchasing recommendations for the horticultural budget to the landscaper.
Maintain the equipment
Follows all safety practices.
Selects and applies a variety of herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals.
Maintains knowledge of best practices and trends in turf management and landscaping techniques.
Participates in design recommendations and installs approved landscape designs; identifies and obtains the necessary plants; directs and participates in pruning, trimming, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, spraying and general maintenance of plants and trees.
May serve as project manager for construction of landscaping and beautification areas; purchases, plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and related materials and supplies.
Works with gardens, civic clubs and other clubs or organizations on tree planting and flower gardens

Participates in setting up and cleaning up for the Town Fair and snow removal.

Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of landscaping and horticultural methods and techniques.
Knowledge of the dangers of flower, tree and shrub maintenance work and the appropriate safety precautions.
Knowledge of the species of herbs, flowers, shrubs and trees grown in the area, their planting, duration, propagation and soil requirements.
Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals used for maintenance and their safe and effective applications.
Knowledge of professional risks and associated safety instructions.
Knowledge of organizational purchasing and budgeting policies and procedures.
Proficiency in the use of landscaping equipment and tools.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to write reports and maintain records.
Ability to respond to the public with courtesy and tact

Physical requirements and education
Must be able to physically perform basic operational life functions i.e. climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping with fingers, feeling speaking , hearing and making repetitive movements.
Must be able to perform heavy work using up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare planting plans, operate landscaping equipment, read and prepare reports, perform building maintenance and cleaning tasks, and determine accuracy, cleanliness and thoroughness of work
