ALMERE, The Netherlands, 12th May, 2022 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates pavilion, titled ‘Saltwater Cities: Where Land Meets Sea’ at Floriade Expo 2022 International Horticulture Exhibition (Floriade) in the Netherlands, shows how the United Arab Emirates has overcome the harsh environment of the desert and the sea to develop prosperous and sustainable cities.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, announced the UAE’s participation in this international forum and said, “We are honored to join Floriade Expo 2022 and share the Emirates’ sustainable development journey. Salt Water Cities: Where Land Meets Sea, demonstrates how the UAE has adapted to our desert environment and arid climate and how our commitment to conserving biodiversity and championing food security and water stimulates socio-economic development in a sustainable way.

She added: “Our ancestors and founding fathers addressed the limitations posed by our desert environment through the responsible use of natural resources – this resilience continues today as we work to strengthen our food security for current and future generations. “.

Jamal Al Musharrekh, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is the Commissioner General of the United Arab Emirates Pavilion in Floriade, which was officially inaugurated on April 14, 2022.

Exhibiting for the first time at Floriade, the UAE pavilion, which will welcome visitors until October 9, explores how the country is meeting the challenges of a landscape where water scarcity, scorching heat and salty soil make l typical horticulture almost impossible to achieve in a sustainable way.

Al Musharrekh added that Salt Water Cities showcases the UAE’s response to the Floriade’s theme of “growing green cities”, telling the story of a unique journey of optimism and resilience and how the people of the Emirates United Arabs have overcome the challenges of living in an ecotone of desert and sea to develop prosperous and sustainable cities.

Commenting on the pavilion, the UAE Ambassador said, “The history of the UAE is one of ambition and collective progress, and we are honored to host our inaugural pavilion at Floriade Expo 2022. Our climate extreme means that sustainability is intrinsic to our national identity and DNA.

The guest experience of the UAE Pavilion at Floriade Expo 2022 begins with a saltwater garden inspired by the circular bio-saline farming systems created in the UAE. The exhibit showcases halophyte plants that can thrive in the saltwater environment of the UAE – glasswort, quinoa, mangroves, microalgae and seagrass.

On the opening day, the Commissioner General was joined by the Mayor of Almere, representatives from the Netherlands and the creatives who contributed to the UAE pavilion at Floriade, including Tellart, a company based in the Netherlands. Bas who co-designed the pavilion exhibit in partnership with UAE-based Pragma, the saltwater garden architects.

Attendees also included representatives from Aectual, a Netherlands-based company that creates bespoke circular interior objects and architectural systems through innovative 3D printing techniques, reusing materials.
