The familiar history of businesses born in garages has almost become an entrepreneur’s rite of passage. The duo of brothers Don and David Flesher were no exception when they started their landscaping business, Grow It Land Designs, in the late ’90s.

“We had an old man next door in Garland, where we started the business in my garage,” Don said. “He said, ‘If I was a youngster, I would start this business and leave.’”

Starting with the maintenance of multi-family landscaping, the Flesher quickly expanded Grow It Land Designs to include commercial and residential landscaping. Between its landscaping services and the front of its Coppell-based retail store, the company now has more than 40 employees.

The Fleshers bought their outlet from Coppell in 2008. After a massive overhaul of the facility, Don said the storefront has been a big draw for customers.

The front yard of Grow It Land Designs, a line of lush flowers and foliage, and large metal sculptures and waterfalls decorate the back. While the Flesher family earn income from the sale of plants and artwork from their store, their landscaping services are a mainstay of their business.

“The landscape division has become one of our best divisions,” said David. “We have a unique look and our guys take pride in every job they do.”

And between David’s experience in running small businesses and Don’s experience in horticultural design, the brothers each run their own respective parts of the business.

“He’s really good at counting money,” Don said. “I’m really good at bringing it up.”

The Flesheres believe in giving back to the Coppell community by providing scholarships to students.

“We give thousands of dollars in scholarships to students in the Coppell Independent School District,” said David. “It’s really rewarding.
